It’s not only about teaching sustainability, the fact that we promote excellence in education and that good-quality education is made available to all, especially to those in disadvantaged groups, is a way to effectively tackle societal issues and help build a sustainable economy. The Department of Education and Skills carried out a Mid-term review of the National Strategy on Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) in early 2018. The Mid-term review, including a public consultation process, considered progress to date under each of the 44 action areas set out in the Strategy and made recommendations for further action to 2020. Education for sustainable development (ESD) is defined as education that encourages changes in knowledge, skills, values, and attitudes to enable a more sustainable and equitable society. ESD aims to empower and equip current and future generations to meet the needs using a balanced and integrated approach to the economic, social and environmental dimensions of sustainable development.
